Gallery Wrap Art Print Programme on 380gsm Poly-Cotton Canvas

This case documents how a 60 inch wide 380gsm poly-cotton inkjet canvas roll became the single stock behind a gallery wrap art print programme running eco-solvent and latex lines. The objective: one canvas serving stretched art prints for galleries and hospitality interiors, without the media reprints that eroded margin on the previous 260gsm cotton stock.

Project Background

The client operates an art reproduction and interior decor business, supplying stretched canvas prints to gallery retailers, hotel refurbishment contractors and online art platforms. Output is dominated by stretched pieces between 60 x 90 cm and 120 x 180 cm. Two production routes run in parallel: an eco-solvent wide format printer for short runs and an HP Latex press for volume work.

The Problems With the Previous Media

  • Edge curl on long rolls. The last two to three metres of each 30 m roll curled enough to trip the take-up unit and jam automatic cutters, forcing manual intervention on roughly one in five rolls.
  • Corner cracking on gallery wrap. Lighter cotton canvas cracked at stretched corners on deep 38 mm bars, especially on 120 x 180 cm pieces, producing reprints and customer claims.
  • Two media SKUs. Separate canvases for solvent and latex doubled inventory and created mismatch between runs of the same artwork.
  • Fragile prints. Coated surfaces marked on handling and could not be cleaned after mounting.

The Solution: One 380gsm Poly-Cotton Stock

A 380gsm poly-cotton canvas (35% cotton / 65% polyester) in 60 inch x 30 m rolls was introduced as the single media for the programme. Three properties drove the decision:

  1. Dual ink compatibility. The matte waterproof coating takes eco-solvent, latex and pigment inks, so one roll serves both production routes.
  2. Heavier base for deep stretchers. The 380gsm body folds around 38 mm bars without corner cracking, removing the reprint driver.
  3. Controlled roll winding. Rolls wound under controlled tension and sleeved reach the last metre as flat as the first, which keeps the take-up unit and cutter running unattended.

Quality Control Checks

  • Ink limit verification on the first metre of every roll, capped at 280% total coverage to avoid pooling in the weave.
  • Opacity check at 96% to confirm no print-through on double sided or backlit display work.
  • Corner pull and wipe test on one sample per batch: stretched and released to check for cracking, then wiped with a damp cloth to confirm the waterproof face holds.

What Made the Difference

The gain was the combination, not one property. A 260gsm canvas with the same coating would still have cracked at the corners, and a heavier cotton canvas would still have demanded two SKUs. The poly-cotton blend also adds dimensional stability that pure cotton lacks in humid climates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one roll run on eco-solvent and latex machines?
Yes. The coating is profiled for both, so a single media entry covers both presses.

Is a fixative needed?
Not for eco-solvent or latex output. For aqueous pigment prints, apply a spray fixative before stretching.

What roll widths are available?
Standard 60 inch, with custom widths from 24 inch to 126 inch produced to order.
